Letter of Lord Basil Feilding to his brother-in-law, James, 3rd Marquis [later 1st Duke] of Hamilton, 5 February 1637/8

and that misfortune may not make you
a loser, if Your Lordship will give me leave,
I will give order upon notice from
you that they may be excused,
as I shall likewise persuade
Your Lordship not to entrust them
to one ship wherein your pleasure
will arrive timely enough [for deleted, at deleted] Turin
to enable me from Turin to send such directions
hither as may prove most to Your
Lordship's satisfaction, there being for the
present no ship in this harbour
bound for England. The particulars
I have writ to Your Lordship
concerning Mr Petty you will be
pleased rather to laugh at than
to be angry at, for setting aside
this profession of hunting after pictures,
wherein his eagerness doth bring him-
self and others into inconveniencies, he
is a very honest and an able man.
I have nothing else for the present
