Portrait of a Gentleman

Portrait of Prince Frederick Henry, Count Palatine of the Rhine and another gentleman. Both signed and one dated 1629.
Painted in 1629 by Michael Mierevelt (1567-1641)

It is thought that this portrait, which is part of a pair with that of Prince Frederick Henry (ID No. 221A) may be a self portrait by Mierevelt, but unfortunately the inscription has been partly obliterated by restoration.

Mierevelt painted religious works, such as altar pieces, but his portraits of some of the Princes of the House of Nassau were so admired that he was thereafter continuously employed in portraiture.

He was invited to England by Charles I but declined, because of an outbreak of the plague in London at the time. He died in Delft aged 74.
