Princess Elizabeth Stewart, born 1596, was the daughter of James VI and Anne of Denmark and named after her godmother Elizabeth I. In 1613 she married Frederick, Elector Palatine of the Rhine who in 1619 was offered and accepted the throne of Bohemia.

He reigned for less than a year, being driven out of Bohemia and his other territories by the army of the Catholic Emperor Ferdinand, and he and Elizabeth, to be known as the "Winter Queen", lived in exile in the Hague, as guests of the Prince of Orange.

Their children included the mother of the future George I and Prince Rupert of the Rhine who fought for King Charles in the Civil War. James, 1st Duke of Hamilton, fought under King Gustavus Adolphus in the 30 Years War as an ally of the King of Bohemia.
