Portrait of a gentleman in full wig, half length, oval.
Attributed to Willem Wissing (1656-1687)

The gentleman in the portrait has been variously identified, but he does closely resemble Lord Basil Hamilton (1671-1701) whose portrait by Sir Godfrey Kneller is at Lennoxlove.

The artist to whom the portrait is now attributed, Willem Wissing, was at one time assistant to Sir Peter Lely and painted many members of the aristocracy and the Royal Family.

It was to Lord Basil's heirs that the Earldom of Selkirk passed until on the death of Dunbar Hamilton it merged with the Dukedom of Hamilton, re-emerging, on the succession of the 14th Duke, to his younger brother George Nigel, 7th Earl.
