Portrait of Prince Frederick Henry, Count Palatine of the Rhine (1614-1629)
Portrait of Prince Frederick Henry, Count Palatine of the Rhine and another gentleman.
Painted and signed in 1629 by Michael Mierevelt (1567-1641)
Prince Frederick Henry was the eldest son of Frederick V, Elector Palatine and Princess Elizabeth Stewart (the "Winter Queen"), and so a grandson of King James VI.
His father fought on the Protestant side in the Thirty Years War and having lost the throne of Bohemia after reigning for less than a year lived in exile with his Queen in the Hague as a guest of Prince William of Orange.
Prince Frederick Henry was drowned off Holland at the age of 15. There is another portrait of him by Mierevelt in the Gallery at the Hague.
