The second daughter of James II but brought up like her sister Mary as a Protestant, Anne succeeded in 1702 on William III's death and none of her children surviving was herself succeeded by Hanoverian George I in terms of the 1701 Act of Succession
Her reign largely coincided with the War of the Spanish Succession which prevented the union of the thrones of France and Spain, saw Marlborough's victories at Bleheim, Ramillies etc. and ended with cession to the UK of French Canada and Gibraltar.
The Act of Union of 1707 completed the process, begun by William III, of the union of the Parliaments of England and Scotland. In England party strife over the conduct of the war did not infect this issue. In Scotland, for many reasons, passions ran higher.
