Portrait of a Gentleman. School of Kneller (1646-1723), oval

At first sight the subject of this portrait of a man in armour resembles the 3rd Duke, of whom a three-quarter length portrait by Sir Godfrey Kneller hangs on the wall opposite to this painting.
However, further consideration and comparison suggest that the subject is King William III during whose reign a considerable number of Kneller's most noteworthy portraits were painted.

In his early years Kneller, who was born Gottfried Kniller in Lubeck, entered the school of Rembrandt and studied under one of Rembrandt's most notable pupils and followers, Ferdinand Bol.
