Mytens came to England during the reign of James VI and I, and the 2nd Marquis who went abroad after his early education in Scotland returned to Scotland around 1610 when the date on the portrait indicates it was painted.

James had succeeded his father John as Marquis in 1604 and his mad uncle as Earl of Arran in 1609. Persuaded by the King to attend Court in London he was made a Peer of England, Earl of Cambridge and Lord Innerdale in 1619 and KG in 1621.
He died at Whitehall, some suggested poisoned by the Duke of Buckingham. He married Lady Anne Cunningham " a lady of firm and masculine disposition"; they had five children including James, later 1st Duke and William, 2nd Duke of Hamilton.
